Barbara Hutton, the American heiress to the
Woolworth fortune, created a Japanese palace here in Cuernavaca, Mexico
on a 30 acre estate. Using both materials and master craftsmen from Japan,
she constructed the estate in 1959 for $3.2 million. The place is spectacular.
Sumiya means “the place of peace, tranquility, and longevity" and
the house is an exact replica of one in Kyoto, Japan.
On Sunday we ate at Sumiya, the signature
restaurant, showcasing international and Japanese specialties. The restaurant
offers both terrace and indoor dining and a buffet on Sundays for about
$15.00 USD. We had the Buffet but we noticed people were also eating off
of the menu. The food was excellent and the surroundings all you could
ask for.
I didn't have my camera with me so we went
back on Monday and ate at the other restraunt practically next door: La
Arboleda, an outdoor restaurant shaded by enormous Indian laurel trees
and is open 7 am to midnight. We eat breakfast off the menu and noticed
that they had a buffet in this reastaurant as well for about 9.00 USD during
the weekdays.
